Did you know you can grow your own shower and dish sponges? That's right! Loofah sponges come from inside a fruit that looks like a giant cucumber, and they can be grown right in your own backyard. Introducing loofah to your garden is a unique and exciting way to embrace a more sustainable lifestyle.

Plant your loofah indoors a few weeks before the last frost- seeds require scarification. Do not transplant out until nights are warm or they will be stunted. Loofah plant vines need to be trained up a trellis like a cucumber; a single vine can stretch over a dozen feet. Allowing the loofah to hang from the vine in full sun for a few weeks will greatly increase your chances of producing a high quality sponge.

Very young loofah fruit are also edible and enjoyed in many cultures' cuisines.
