This heirloom lettuce variety loves the cold of early spring and late fall. It produces red, ruffled leaves with a shiny appearance. Harvest when heads are small and tender for maximum sweetness; harvest right before bolting to maximize harvest size. This variety is so hardy we have found it happily self-seeding in places like woodpiles & cracks between rocks. It can even be grown indoors under grow lights in winter.

This lettuce lineage has several years of Franken Farm breeding. It self seeds in the greenhouse and begins popping up everywhere at the end of winter; it responds more to day length than to temperature, because it is so cold tolerant. Only the healthiest self-seeded heads are marked for seed collection.

Grown organically with love and tenderness in the Bruce Peninsula, Ontario, Canada, in the summer of 2024. Germination tested. Minimum 100 seeds.
